THE Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in the state, Chief Adetunji Olurin, of age falsification. In a statement signed by its publicity secretaryy, Alhaji Raheem Ajayi, the party said Olurin, had in an interview to the then Television Service of Oyo State (TSOS), now Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), claimed that he was born on December 3, 1944.

The statement, backed with video evidence monitored by the Nigerian Tribune, confirmed Olurin’s claim that he was born on the said day.

But, the former military administrator of Oyo and Ekiti states, according to the party, in another documentary interview on his gubernatorial ambition in Ogun State, aired on April 24, on Gateway Television claimed to have joined the military in 1967 at the age of 21.

The PPN noted that with Olurin’s declaration of joining the army at the age of 21 meant that he was born in 1946, contrary to the 1944 date.

”With this clear lie, General Olurin gives himself away as someone that should not be trusted by the people of Ogun State, whose mandate to govern he seeks. Since this is a clear case of perjury, it is evident that in the unlikely event that he emerges as the governor of Ogun State, his victory will be annulled by the courts if and when his victory is challenged,” the PPN said.

When contacted, the media consultant to Chief Olurin, Mr Dele Agekameh, described the issue as mere propaganda and urged the PPN to approach the court of law with their evidences over the matter.

“The people behind this should go and do serious thing. It is mere propaganda. Most of them were not alive when the man was born. In those days, they use birth certificate and not declaration of age. They should go and prove the matter before the court of law,” he said.

Agekameh described the people behind what he described as “unholy rumour” as unserious people, while he charged them to continue to mourn their loss at the election slated for tomorrow.
