though President Goodluck Jonathan got the substantial part of his votes from the southern part of Nigeria, no geo-political region can claim the victory because 32 states spread across the north and south gave the President minimum of 25% votes cast which he needed to meet constitutional requirements before winning the election, former deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, has said.
He said Jonathan’s victory should therefore unite and not divide the country, noting that the violence which erupted in the northern part of the country was regrettable.
“The fact that President Jonathan obtained over 25% of the votes cast in 33 states of the federation shows that he indeed enjoys a truly national mandate freely given by all sections of the country cutting across the North, South, East and West,” Nwuche who was deputy co-ordinator of the President’s campaign in the south-south said.
“Nigerians have demonstrated that they have risen above ethnic, religious and parochial interests. Indeed, we have become a true nation based on justice, equity and fairness,” he declared.
The former speaker condoled those that lost loved ones and commiserated with those who lost property while calling on political leaders to regularly call supporters to order especially after elections.
