Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp paid tribute to midfielder Scott Parker for winning the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award.

The Scot was happy to see a player from outside the “celebrity clubs” win the award, and hailed the West Ham United man for his efforts in his club’s relegation scrap.

“It’s a good thing to recognise the good pros in the game,” Sir Alex told reporters. “It’s nice to recognise somebody outside of the celebrity clubs in the Premier League, the teams who are getting all the publicity, and to give it to a real good pro. It’s a good step forward.”

Redknapp said: “He’s a real top pro, a proper good bloke, family man, role model, not a minute’s problem and just gets on with it. I think he’s brilliant. I’m pleased to see an English boy win it.”

The Hammers have a very real possibility of being relegated this season, as they are currently at the bottom of the table with only four games to go.

And the Spurs boss feels that Parker will only remain with the east London club if they manage to avoid the drop this season.

He added: “If West Ham stay up I’m sure he will stay. If they go down, is he going to play in the Championship next year? I wouldn’t have thought so, would you? He wants to play for England.”
