Wigan boss Roberto Martinez blamed a ‘ridiculous’ penalty decision from referee Lee Probert for his side’s 4-2 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The incident occurred when Stephane Sessegnon went to ground in the area after Antolin Alcaraz appeared to make contact with him whilst trying to win the ball from the Benin international. The midfielder scored the spot-kick to leave Martinez fuming.

“If you look at the replay, it’s a shoulder to shoulder, I cannot understand how you can give such a massive call if you’re not 100 per cent because I’m watching the replay and I can’t see how that is a penalty,” he told reporters.

“That make things very difficult. In football sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good and today it was Sunderland’s day and we’ll move one.

“I think he got the call wrong. I don’t know where he’s coming from I had the same angle as the referee and it’s clearly a shoulder to shoulder.

“I asked him after the game whether he saw something else, if he saw Antolin Alcaraz tackled the Sunderland player but he said it was a penalty kick by his action of trying to win the ball.

“It really killed our opportunity of getting a positive result, from our point of view we did everything we had to do, we were very brave and held the ball for long spells and we scored the first goal. To score two goals from open play away from home you should be able to get a positive result.”
