Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has defended striker Edin Dzeko’s run of poor form and believes the Bosnian can still score important goals before the end of the season, insiting that his lacklustre form is the same experienced by Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres.
Since his £27 million transfer from Wolfsberg the front man has failed to electrify the Premier League with the performances he so often showcased in Germany, with 66 goals in 111 games to his name in the Bundesliga before his move to England in January.
The 25-year-old seems to have succumbed to the disruption of his form similar to that of Chelsea’s Torres after both have failed to live up their expectations following their mid-season transfers.
Still awaiting his first goal in England’s top flight, Dzeko has only managed to find the net in the FA Cup and Europa League.
Mancini however is remaining positive that a combination of the striker’s talent and his own managerial qualities will bring out the best in the Bosnian in the near future.
“It is difficult for him, it is also difficult for me, but it can happen when you change teams,” Mancini told the press.
“It is important he works hard, only this. I believe Edin is one of the top strikers in Europe but sometimes incredible things happen to strikers.
“You can score, you don’t know why. On the other hand, Wayne Rooney did not score for months, the same for Torres.
“This is an incredible situation for a striker. But I am sure next season Edin will be fantastic for City.
“Now we have six games and the FA Cup final and Dzeko can score important goals in this time.”
