THE Namibia Premier League yesterday officially severed ties with its chief executive officer Mathew Haikali, following an almost four-month-long disciplinary procedure.

Haikali was dismissed because of “three serious charges of financial irregularity” which he was under investigation for and “all three were proven to be valid by an independent panel of legal experts”, NPL chairman Johnny Doëseb announced at a press conference.

Doëseb said Haikali has appealed the decision, and that Tovey //Hoëbeb will remain the NPL acting CEO.

The first of Haikali’s charges was the unauthorised increase of his salary and that of the entire NPL staff between September and November last year.

He also stood accused of gross negligence as well as having refused to adhere to his employment contract by failing to get permission from the BOG for the salary increments, among other things.

“Given the serious nature of the these offences, the panel and therefore the league had no other option but to terminate the services of our former chief executive officer with effect from 14 April,” Doëseb told reporters.

“As such the NPL has officially parted ways with its former employee and therefore he is no longer an employee of the league.”
