David Moyes has played down comparisons between his Everton side and fellow countryman’s Manchester United, having been dubbed as one of the potential successors to Sir Alex Ferguson.

And while the Goodison Park boss admits he is delighted to hear such a comparison, he believes that the kind words are somewhat exaggerated, despite the club’s record of nurturing young talent.

“If people are saying that, that’s great, but I would say they have about 250,000 more trophies than we have and so I can’t see the comparison in truth,” Moyes told reporters.

“If other people see it, that’s great because that shows we are making progress.

“I really hope that someday we will be able to compete and challenge them.”

Ahead of the clash at Old Trafford, the 47-year-old is hoping to have key men available in able to implement the fighting spirit the Toffees showed at the corresponding fixture at Goodison in September.

Scorers on that day, Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta, are doubts for the match, but Moyes expects them to be back for Everton before the end of the season.

Moyes said: “It is not just this game – if we can get them back for Wigan, West Brom, Manchester City and Chelsea in the next four games it would be great.

“Just getting them back around the squad is important.”
