Otiko Afisah-Djaba, National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, believes Mr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra is overly enthusiastic in discharging his duties as the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

This follows the near-ripping off of a trader’s ear by a taskforce team from the AMA. Mr. Ebenezer Obeng, a 35 year-old shoe seller, on Tuesday evening had his right ear almost severed off by some members of the AMA task force.

Speaking to the issue on PeaceFM’s flagship programme, Otiko Afisah-Djaba stated that “the man has become overly enthusiastic and that is why all these things are happening. Even though he is doing well, I don’t think this should be done. He should take his time to do the right thing. You don’t need to prove that you are the best AMA boss. You came for the people so you need to serve them and not vice versa. Since he came with his decongestion policy, he has caused confusion all over…”

According to her, even though she is not against attempts by the AMA to decongest certain parts of the capital, it should be done with a “human face”.

“If things like this keep occurring in President Mills’ administration, where is the peace he always talks about? You cannot abuse people under the leadership of a president who has been touted as ‘Father for all”, Mr. Right and so on…Is he the only person who can play the duty of an AMA boss?” she asked.

The NPP National Women’s Organiser urged the AMA Boss to rather concentrate on stopping the cholera epidemic by getting rid of the filth that has engulfed the city instead of infringing on their rights of the public and engaging in courting cheap publicity by directing traffic.

“We believe in democracy, rule of law and human rights and such abuses by the AMA will not help the nation. It will even cause financial loss to the state; it will not bring peace or love. It will rather worsen the situation of the people. Under the leadership of President Atta Mills, man of peace and a caring father, he needs to wake up and ensure that the various institutions perform their duty,” she said.
