The Police Administration has announced that it will soon clamp down on persons who download and transfer ring tones to mobile phones illegally since it amounts to piracy.
The practice has been seen as a lucrative business in Accra particularly at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where songs are downloaded onto computers and later transferred onto mobile phones at a fee. Ten tracks are transferred onto the phone of a client at the cost of GHC 1.
Sone of the operators who spoke to Asempa News say even though they are aware that the songs they download are the intellectual property of the composers and amounts to committing crime, they cannot desist from the business because it is very lucrative.
They admit that the police and some officers from the Copyright office have been after them in recent times, but said they will not be deterred by that.
They said close to 50 phone users walk to them on a daily basis to download favorite tracks onto their phones.
They usually download the songs from the Internet onto pen drives and transfer it onto their personal computers and laptops and sell them out.
They claim other musicians also come to them personally with their new tracks for them to play as a way of promoting their sales. They however declined to mention who those musicians are.
