Ireland: Finally set to make his Newcastle debut against Manchester United at St James’ Park

Alan Pardew is hoping Stephen Ireland can help to inch Newcastle United to safety as the midfielder finally prepares to make his debut.

Ireland joined Newcastle on loan from Aston Villa in the January transfer window, but he has yet to make an appearance due to knee and thigh injuries.

He is keen to secure a permanent deal at St James’ Park and has been pencilled in to feature in Tuesday’s game against Premier League leaders Manchester United.

Pardew is looking forward to seeing the 24-year-old in action and believes it is a bonus that Newcastle can finally call on Ireland.

Quality

“Stephen Ireland will be involved in this game and that’s a big bonus because we have been waiting a long time for Stephen,” said the Newcastle boss.

“His quality will help us in the last six games for sure. Technical quality – that’s what he brings.

“You have got a player who has played at the highest level, and we have waited long for him because of his injuries and setbacks that he’s had.

“But hopefully, that will bear some fruit in the last six games.”

Veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper is likely to miss the visit of the Red Devils due to a knee injury, although he is expected to feature again before the season is over.

Pardew said: “Steve had an injection in his knee and it hasn’t settled down as well as we would have liked, and the game is probably too soon for him.

“We don’t think he is out for the remainder of the season. We just hope it settles down.”
