Workers Of GNA Embark On Sit-Down Strike Action

Workers of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday afternoon laid down their tools following the National Media Commission’s (NMC) decision to recall Nana Appau Duah, General Manager (GM) from an indefinite leave.

The Board of the National Wire Service asked Nana Appau Duah to
take his six years accumulative leave as a pre-emptive measure to
prevent any eventuality and to calm down the nerves of the agitating
workers, who said they were fed up with his style of leadership.

The Local Leadership of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU)
and Communications Workers Union (CWU) on hearing that the NMC had
asked Nana Appau Duah to resume duty called an emergency workers
meeting at which they decided to lay down their tools with effect from
1600 hours Monday April 18 2011.

In a statement jointly signed by Mr Enoch Antwi, Chairman of
CWU, and Mr Ben Mintah, Chairman of PSWU, and sent to the
Supervising Chief Editor, whom they said was the one they recognised
as the Acting General Manager, they said “they are in a dilemma, as
to who to relate to as the Chief Executive – Nana Appau Duah, who was
asked by the GNA Board to proceed on leave, while the Board looked
into some allegations made against him by the Unions or to Mr
Boakye-Dankwa Boadi, who the Board directed Nana Appau Duah to hand
over to.

On Thursday, April 14, the GNA Board of Directors directed Mr
Boakye-Dankwa Boadi, to assume duty as the Acting General Manager with
effect from 15th April 2011 while Nana Appau Duah proceeded on an
indefinite leave after attaining the compulsory retiring age of 60
years and had not been on leave for six years.
