Kagame Cup to Cost Sh2.4 Billion

    Kampala — This year’s Cecafa-Kagame Cup will cost sponsors El Merriekh Group Shs2.4bn. The event, to be hosted by Sudan, is due June 21-July 5.

    According to a press release from Nicholas Musonye, the Cecafa general secretary, El Merriekh Group have pledged to cover air tickets, accommodation and internal transport for all participating clubs and referees. In 2009, the group spent Shs1.8b ($800,000) on 12 teams. With 14 teams expected this year, the budget has shot up by Shs460m ($200,000). The sponsors have also agreed to add Shs92.3m ($40,000) to Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s donation of Shs138.5m ($60,000) to make the total cash prize Shs230.8m ($100,000). Uganda will be represented by Bunnamwaya.
