FOLLOWING the arrest and arraignment of the Governorship Candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Senator James Udoedehe, by the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the party on Saturday said that the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, was only jittery of the popularity rate and public acceptance of the former minister of state for Federal Capital Territory.
The state Chairman of ACN, Mr. Aniekan Akpan, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH through a telephone interview, said that the state governor had been bragging that he would keep the ACN governorship candidate in detention till after the governorship poll.
Akpan expressed dissatisfaction with the security agents for not inviting members of the Peoples Democratic Party for questioning before arraigning Udoedehe on a four count-charge of criminal conspiracy to commit treason.
Udoedehe was on Friday arraigned by the police before Justice Adamu Bello of a Federal High Court in Abuja over the March 22, 2011 political violence in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene that claimed the lives of four people and property worth millions of Naira destroyed.
The party stated that no attempt by the PDP government would prevent ACN from campaigning across the senatorial districts in the state, adding that the PDP government should stop intimidating the opposition parties.
Akpan said, “There is nothing anybody can do to intimidate us.
“How can the PDP government say that nobody should go to Annang land to campaign? The security agents should find out who burnt the vehicles and the campaign office of the President Goodluck Jonathan because it is not the ACN.
“The PDP attacked us, wounded us, shot at our vehicles and that of our governorship candidate in Ikot Ekpene. We were at Ikot Ekpene when the crisis in Uyo was going on.”
Akpan listed those who organised and funded attack on the ACN convoy as some commissioners in Akpabio’s government.
