Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker, Solomon Kalou has emphasized the importance of Ghanaian player, Michael Essien in the Chelsea team. Essien has seldom recorded a flat season at Chelsea since he moved to Stamford Bridge from Olympic Lyonnais in 2005.

The 28 year old who recently recovered fully from an injury has played key roles in Chelsea’s campaign so far.

Essien’s teammate at club level, Solomon Kalou is in Accra with the Ivory Coast national team for their Nation’s Cup qualifier against Benin at the Accra Sports stadium on Sunday, March 27.

The match could not take place in Ivory Coast due to the political upheaval in the country. Solomon Kalou, in an exclusive interview with Citi FM’s Juliet Bawuah, stressed the importance of Ghanaian midfielder, Michael Essien in the Chelsea team.

“Essien is my good friend so I am happy to see him back to top level. He had a difficult time with injury the past year so it’s good for the team to see Essien back in the team and also for himself because I think he deserves a better situation” he said.

“He has that energy which he brings to the team and is so positive. He works so hard for the team and he is always doing great. So it is very important to have this kind of player in the team because he reassures the strikers and midfielders and he is an unselfish player who fights for the team” Kalou told Citi FM.
