Marquez Expecting Prolonged Mexico Career

If and when Rafael Marquez takes the field for Mexico once more, he will become the eighth player in Tricolor history to surpass the century mark.

How has he approached the upcoming milestone?

“To be honest, I don’t keep track,” Marquez told reporters, when asked about his cap total.

Marquez has represented Mexico in three World Cups. While that figure may seem high and possibly sufficient for any player’s career, Marquez is not about to slow down or walk away from El Tri.

“Until my body can’t go any more, I’ll be here,” he said.

Marquez will have the chance to hit the century mark on the weekend when Mexico play Paraguay in Oakland, Calif.

Now that he plays for New York Red Bulls, Marquez may be able to stretch out his international career a bit longer. With Barcelona, Marquez was logging a fair number of games and had little offseason in which to rest. New York’s season ended in November and he took nearly two months off afterward, soaking up the MLS offseason and resting while doing so.

“With the activity I have now, I can produce more during these years,” he said. “It just depends on how my body and my mind are.”
