Vice-President, John Mahama, has underscored the importance of decentralizing the training of health personnel in Ghana, to enable the regional hospitals to train medical doctors.

He observed that there were many qualified people who could not access medical training schools because there were few teaching hospitals and vacancies, and stressed the need for facilities to expand the training to enable more qualified people to come in.

Addressing newsmen after a visit to a Polyclinic at Vedado, a municipality in Cuba, he said, Ghana should take a cue from the Cuban health system by demystifying the training of health personnel, saying, “This is just a small polyclinic but they are training doctors and specialists, why can’t it take place at the regional level in Ghana as well?”

At least, arguably at the regional level, we have decent facilities to train and looking at the polyclinic here, there is not much difference between our regional hospitals,” he noted.

Vice-President Mahama said he was happy that his entourage included senior personnel from the Ghana Health Service. To that end, he indicated that a stakeholders’ conference would soon be held to discuss decentralization of medical training in Ghana.
