Nairobi — Kenya once again dominated the world cross country championships in Spain, a clear indication that sports must be taken as a serious industry.

Winning six out of the eight gold medals is a major achievement for any country, especially as the championship attracted 65 countries. Athletics Kenya should take the cue from this display of prowess by investing its money in the development of the discipline.

Our athletes must be made familiar with new training techniques, and they must receive both cutting edge equipment and technical support if they are to continue performing to such high standards during global championships. The government must also offer incentives like scholarships to younger athletes to make them work harder to improve their performances.

The athletes cannot rest on their laurels; they need to put in more efforts in training as there are other major competitions lined up this season, which will test their endurance, speed and sportsmanship to the maximum. We wish to congratulate the athletes and assure them that they have made us proud to be Kenyans.
