The Convention People’s Party (CPP) shadow Justice Minister, Bright Akwetey says the CPP will never merge with any party, especially the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the two parties are diametrically opposed in ideology and strategy to develop the country.

Sekou Nkrumah, a son of CPP founder, Dr Kwame Nkrumah has been in the media lately calling on the CPP to join forces with the NDC if they ever want to win political power. According to Sekou, the NDC currently has many of its members who draw their roots from the most organised and broad based Nkrumaist party.

Mr Akwetey however disagrees with Dr Sekou Nkrumah. Speaking to Citi Eyewitness News on Monday March 21, he said no true CPP member will belong to another party whilst insisting they are Nkrumaists.

“We are not re-defining anything and we are not merging with anybody, we want to remain Nkrumaist and pure. I understand that politics sometimes gets to a point where you have to enter into alliances and mergers but that is not the situation here. “Sekou is making a misjudgement of the ideological position of the NDC. The NDC has been in power for a long time and we have a history of the NDC acquiescing with the dictates of the World Bank and they have sold all the state enterprises”.

“That is not our ideology. We seek to make the people the center of our development and we also believe that there must be equity in sharing the national cake”.

However, the former coordinator of the National Youth Council, Dr Sekou Nkrumah insists the CPP’s stance is untenable, calling for dialogue to find common ground.

“Instead of looking for a common ground where we can work together for a common interest and help serve the country better and help bring the quality leadership that we all wish for, why do we have to look at differences between us?”

Dr Sekou Nkrumah predicted that the CPP would pull one percent of votes in the 2012 general elections if they fail to merge with the NDC.
