Wigan Athletic full-back Maynor Figueroa wants to use the momentum gathered from Saturday’s win against Birmingham City to help in their fight against relegation.

The Honduran international scored a magnificent winner at the death on Saturday and he is hoping that his team can use the three points to spur them onto bigger and better things as the season draws to a close.

“I’m really proud of the goal because it meant three points for the team,” Figueroa told reporters.

“I was just happy to be able to contribute in this way, because I felt my performance in the first half was not so great for me.

“It was a great day for us and now we must push on and get ourselves out of the relegation zone and use the confidence we have generated to continue winning games.”

The club has been struggling all season but manager Roberto Martinez has maintained that his team should always stick to their football principles and the Spaniard felt Saturday’s victory was a vindication of that.

He said: “I was extremely proud of the players. We went to Eastlands the previous week and performed really well against Manchester City but got nothing out it.”

“The table did not reflect our good performance and sometimes it is hard to be stubborn and stick with your football concepts and, from the players’ point of view, to keep playing the right way.

“So it was pleasing to see our football give us three points back just because of the attitude of the players, playing football in the right way and believing in our concepts.”
