On Friday, March 18 2011, the Daily Guide intercepted a copy of letters sent from the Office of the President, dated 11th March, 2011, inviting some selected members of the party to the meeting.
Signed by Secretary to the President, J.K. Bebaako-Mensah, the letter was headlined; ‘Meeting with Regional Ministers and NDC Regional Chairmen’ and copied to the NDC General Secretary. The second paragraph of the invitation letter sent to the NDC National Chairman Dr. Kwabena Adjei reads like “His Excellency would like you to invite all National Executives to a meeting.”
However, the party’s Propaganda Secretary, Richard Quashigah has denied that the President had met with some National Executive members pointing out that procedurally President John Mills is not mandated by the party’s constitution to convey National Executive Council meetings.
Speaking in an interview on the Big Bite show on Xfm 95.1, a privately owned commercial radio station in Accra, Mr Quashigah said a text message, cancelling the earlier letter was sent around when the anomaly was detected.
He said, “basically, the one to have called a NEC meeting would have been the National Chairman or General Secretary; and therefore, it would have been an error for the President to have called a NEC meeting when the two were not in town… There was an earlier letter that requested NEC officers to attend the meeting, but upon a second thought, it was realized that it could offend the constitution if it is assumed to be a NEC meeting, because we do not call NEC meetings by that procedure.”
