Police have arrested three persons in connection with some disturbances at Gnani in the Yendi district of the Northern Region. The police also confiscated dozens of unlicensed guns belonging to some residents in the area.

On Sunday March 20, a joint military and police team was dispatched to the town to prevent a possible violent clash between two Konkomba clans.

The Chief of Gnani is said to have attempted to install a member of one of the clans, believed to be a Togolese, as chief of a local community.

A native of Gnani who spoke to Citi News on the grounds of anonymity alleged that indigenes of the community had warned the chief not to install the said person as their next chief, but he ignored their warning and attempted to go ahead with the installation, hence the fierce resistance from the irate youth.

Yendi District Police commander, Chief Superintendent Charles Domanban told Citi News the situation is now under control.

He said investigations into the incident have already started. “We had information yesterday(Sunday)that some houses had been burnt in the night. So when we got there, we noticed that there were a lot of young men around the area and in the course of our search, we found certain arms.

“We had eleven single barrel rifles which were not licensed and moreover there had been a ban on carrying arms there. One house there was burnt and there was an attempt to burn another house” he said.

“We arrested three people together with the eleven single barrel rifles and 17 A-ammunition. For now the place is calm because we were there through the whole night so there have not been further disturbances” he stated.

Superintendent Charles Domanban said the situation will be monitored until total calm is restored.
