Verdict: Woody Allen at his bleakest
Rating: ![]()
You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger may sound like a cheery romcom,
but really it’s about coming to terms with sexual humiliation, losing
one’s talent, financial dependency and death.
Yes, Death is the
tall, dark stranger all these characters are going to meet, and Woody
Allen – never more ruthless – delights in their imminent comeuppance.
In the mood for malice? If you’re fed up of feelgood fuzziness, Woody Allen’s new film might be a perfect choice
The
distinguished actors are as strong as you would expect, the narrative
structure is well-crafted, and there’s something curiously bracing about
Allen’s misanthropy. It’s redolent of Mike Leigh in his Abigail’s Party
period.
It may appal those who prefer the cosier, more
generous-spirited Woody who created Annie Hall, Hannah And Her Sisters
and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. And it’s about as far as you can get from
the cuteness of Chalet Girl and Submarine.
But you might enjoy it, if you’re fed up with feelgood fuzziness and in the mood for malice.
