Kampala — Seventeen year-old Ugandan David Oringa notched the first shock of the 2011 Castle Lite Uganda Tennis Open when he sent the tourney’s fourth seed Francis Rogoi of Kenya packing in the round of 16 yesterday. Rogoi reached the semi-finals last year.
Oringa, with the help of a partisan vocal crowd at Lugogo, drew all his wit to dispatch Rogoi in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, booking a quarterfinal slot in the rain-interrupted showpiece. “I didn’t do anything special.
I just concentrated more and hit all his (Rogoi) loose balls hard. I don’t think I would have won had I allowed the game into third a set,” said the Kololo senior six student who represented Uganda at the Africa Youth Games in Rabat, Morocco in July 2010.
“There will not be any celebrations for this win. I still have work to do. I am so tired and need to sleep now,” he said.
