Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Eastern Region say more than 4,000 people have been displaced following consistent rain rainstorm in the region.
More than 100 homes have been destroyed by the violent storm with the latest occurring on Wednesday March 16, at Afram plains.
Rescue efforts have been intensified to assist victims.
NADMO officials say a lot of activities including academic work in many schools have been suspended.
The NADMO coordinator for the Eastern Region, Ransford Owusu Boakye told Citi News efforts are being made to receive more assistance from the national NADMO Headquarters.
“It has affected almost about 14 districts out of the 21. Even at Afram Plains that is Kwahu, North, almost about four schools have been ripped off. About hundred and fifty two displaced at Afram plains but generally there are about 4,254 people displaced in over 107 communities. We are challenged but we are still managing. We have been able to send in some relief items to some of the districts but others we haven’t. We have informed Accra and hopefully by the weekend we will be moving out with something” he noted.
Over 2,000 residents of the Karaga District in the Northern Region have also been rendered homeless by a rainstorm that hit the area on Monday March 14.
Almost 100 households including the District Chief Executive’s residence, that of the District Coordinating Director, the District Finance Officer, the NHIS Manager and the Chief’s palace were badly damaged.
