Super Falcons assistant coaches Ann Chiejine and Idris Gidado have been relieved of their duties by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), in a move bound to raise many eyebrows.
Both officials were missing when the squad resumed training on Tuesday, and officials say they have been instructed to ‘stay away’ from the team.
“The two coaches have been asked to stay away from the team,” NFF Chief Media Officer Ademola Olajire confirmed. NFF’s Technical Committee chairman, Christopher Green declined to state any reasons for the dismissal of the duo.
It is his committee, which directly supervises the coaches on the employ of the Glass House.
When contacted the NFF Executive Committee member would only say: “The decision has been taken, that is all I can say.”
Green would also not say if replacements would be named. In the interim, Head Coach Uche Eucharia has added goalkeeper training to her list of responsibilities. This area was handled by now sacked Chiejine, who was a long time national goaltender herself.
Ironically this latest action will only further fuel speculation that ultimately even Eucharia herself would not be in charge of the team for this summer’s World Cup finals in Germany.
Since qualifying the team in style for Germany 2011, rumours have been rife that the former national team player would be made to give up her position in favour of a ‘more experienced’ coach.
Although the Glass House has denied this, the latest action is bound to stoke the fire again.
