A United Nations envoy, Mrs. Ellen Loj, has said that the rest of Africa looks up to Nigeria in its April elections to show that democracy is not only about frank and open political discussions, but also about respect for free, fair and transparent polls.

Loj, who spoke at a joint medal award ceremony for 1,665 Nigerian peacekeepers (military and police), also commended the unwavering commitment of Nigeria to the maintenance of peace and security in Liberia.

Her comment was contained in electronic mail made available to our correspondent by the Public Information Officer, United Nations Police, United Nations Mission in Liberia, Ms. Olabisi Okuwobi, on Thursday.

“The whole of Africa will be watching you as Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa; we count on you showing the way,” Loj said.

She expressed confidence that Nigeria would serve as a powerful inspiration to everyone in Liberia, especially as Liberia and Liberians prepare themselves for the elections later this year.

On the elections in Liberia, Loj urged all Liberians to seize the opportunity to demonstrate that they are steadfast in their resolve to ensure that peace is maintained in their country.

“It will be an important opportunity to show that free, fair and transparent elections can be carried out in Liberia by Liberians themselves; and that all Liberians, regardless of who wins or who loses, will continue to focus on maintaining the peace and towards sustainable development of the country,” she added.
