GREEN Buffaloes chairperson James Mazimba has said the club’s failure to defend the season-opening Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndholvu Charity Shield should raise serious concerns and that the club now needs to use the defeat as a tonic to perform well in the league this year.

Mazimba said Buffaloes, who lost 4-3 on post-match penalties in the semi-finals to eventual champions Zesco United, said the defeat must propel and inspire them to work hard in the 2011 soccer season.

He said the club should strive for greater achievements which should culminate into Buffaloes emerging league champions and automatically qualify for the CAF club competitions.

Mazimba said during the annual general meeting held at Arakan Barracks in Lusaka on Wednesday that Buffaloes’ poor performance had contributed to the team failing to attract sponsors.

And Mazimba has implored the newly-elected Buffaloes club executive committee members to apply their abilities and ingenuity to lay a firm foundation. He said once this was achieved, there would be no reason for failure to record expected results and even beyond.

“Sponsors are always ready to pump in more resources but our poor performance has been a major hindrance and I am appealing to the club to work extremely hard and deliver to the expectations of the Zambia Army commander,” he said

He also said the poor attendance by Buffaloes supporters at league and cup matches was worrying and attributed this to a lack of consistence with exhibition of higher standards of play on the field.
