Kampala — Scrum-half Anthony Kinene’s early penalty sprung MTN Heathens into life to batter his G4S Pirates team 43-6 in the Nile Special Rugby Premier League at Kampala RFC on Saturday.
Donning a new glossy yellow jersey, Heathens were uncharacteristically slow at the start until wing Jude Keremundu lit up the game with 20 points including a try in either half to leave Pirates a shattered carnage.
Looking stunned, flanker Robert Seguya restored parity with a neat penalty in the 10th minute.
Kinene could have opened up the gap thereafter but when he missed his kick, the visitors engaged their usual demolition gear. They maintained their six-point lead at the summit with 35 points whereas utl Kobs remain second after routing Entebbe Mongers 54-5 in the early game. Pirates are third on 24 as the league hit the halfway mark.
Joel Kimuli scored the opening try against his former side only for Keremundu to miss the conversion that hardly mattered as he put a show to take the man-of-the-match award. He went over and set-up Seguya for 22-3 halftime lead, all this punctuated by two penalties missed by Kinene.
Resumption only brought more pain for Pirates and joy for Heathens when wing Jonathan Bishop Onen stretched the margin with his 11th try of a stellar season.
Another Kinene penalty received a more than sufficient response with tries from centre Michael Wokorach and Keremundu. The latter converted both to ink Heathens’ seventh straight bonus point of what is quickly becoming a memorable season for the Kyadondo RFC side. Sadly, the other title pretenders will have to Heathens at their home turf as the champions will play all their second round fixtures there.
A rollercoaster week for Kobs ended on a high with sweet revenge over Mongers through tries from Lawrence Wakabi, Ambrose Kamanyiire, Alex Leku, Timothy Kabonero, Robert Byabashaija and Oscar Kalyango.
