The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured its members of staff that it will pay a backlog of hazard allowance owed them as soon as the 2011 budget is approved.
It, however, explained that this was subject to the availability of appropriated funds.
Secretary to the Commission, Alhaji Abdulahi Kaugama was quoted as saying so in the Wednesday edition of the INEC Daily Bulletin.
His explanation followed growing agitation among members of staff who believe that the commission had the funds but had refused to pay.
Kaugama recalled that the commission went through a similar travail in 2010 adding that as soon as the budget was approved and the allowance would be paid.
The bulletin read in part, “So far, the commission has been defending its budget before the National Assembly.
“The Secretary expressed optimism that the budget would soon be approved by the National Assembly.”
