Lokoja – The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmadu, has said that the 7,003 persons arrested for multiple registration will soon be prosecuted.
Ahmadu said in Lokoja on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting that the offenders were among the 1.3 million eligible voters registered in the state between Jan. 15 and Feb. 5.
He said the names of the offenders had been removed from the voters’ register in line with the new Electoral Act.
The INEC chief said that the culprits would be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.
According to him, the commission has distributed collapsible polling booths and ballot boxes to all the 4,279 polling units in the state in preparation for the general elections.
Abubakar said that current electoral officers in the 21 local government areas of the state would vacate their posts from March 14 for a new set of officers as part of efforts to ensure that the elections were free and fair.
The commissioner stated that all security agents who would be on duty on election days had been specifically briefed on the rules of the election.
Mr Wale Daramola, the SSS Deputy Director of Operations in the state, in his remarks, urged the people to be more vigilant while attending political rallies.
He said the SSS would on March 10 meet with leaders of political parties in the state on how to ensure peace before and during the elections.
Many speakers, including Mr Abdulrahman Sadiq of the DPP and Alhaji Abubakar Alewo of the UNPP commended INEC for the steps taken so far to ensure a free and fair election.
The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by leaders of political parties, representatives of the police, customs, immigration service and civil society groups.
