Deputy Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs, Hajia Hawawu Garba Boya says as parts of efforts to address challenges facing women, her ministry is collaborating with other agencies to fight discrimination against women at work places.
Hajia Hawawu Boya says her ministry had noticed the deep discrimination against women especially at the work place and stressed that it must end as soon as possible.
Speaking to Adom News, the Deputy Minister said as part of plans to fight the discrimination, various sensitization programs will be implemented through agencies to spearhead the campaigns explaining that the goal is for corporate organizations to structure policies that will favour women and not discriminate against them.
Tuesday March 8th 2011, marked the centenary celebrations of International Women’s Day where the Women’s Ministry among other things resolved to strengthen efforts to fight violence against women in collaboration with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
The initiative is a repeat of what was addressed by the former minister of the Ministry, Hajia Alima Mahama in 2007.
Hajia Hawawu Yakubu revealed that her ministry in close discussions with the Ministry of Health, has reduced maternal mortality over the past five years.
However reliable statistics available to Adom News states that pregnant women have poor access to good quality maternal health services, especially at the community level and lack essential care programs to guard them against complications associated with pregnancy and child birth.
The statistics is contrary to the Millennium Development Goal 5 which says maternal mortality should be reduced by three quarters and also be achievable by 2015 but Hajia Hawawu Boya said there is an improvement in the fight against maternal mortality which has not reflected in reports about the MDG.
