Schalke coach Felix Magath praised his side after they came from behind to seal their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win over Valencia.

Despite a frustrating and poor league season, Schalke are doing well in the cups.

They have already booked their place in the German Cup final and have now followed that up by sealing a place in the last eight.

Schalke were favourites to progress after grabbing a 1-1 in Valencia, but they found themselves behind when Ricardo Costa gave the Spanish side the lead at the Veltins Arena.

They battled back, though, with Jefferson Farfan levelling before the break as he curled home a free-kick.

Swiss youngster Mario Gavranovic then put them ahead in the tie before Farfan wrapped up the win in injury-time.

Magath was delighted with how his side coped with the pressure.

“In the Champions League when it comes to it, it is everything or nothing – there is always a high stress factor, ” he said.

“It was always tight but we made sure our emotions did not run wild.

“It was difficult in the beginning to make some real pressure and when we went 1-0 down, we had nothing to lose and we had to go for it.”

    Reports ignored

Schalke’s poor performances in the Bundesliga have seen many reports suggest that Magath would be leaving in the summer no matter what.

But he added: “The background to this game is of no interest to us, the truth was out there on the pitch.

“It’s not interesting for me what the papers say.

    “I have a contract until 2013.”
