The Ghanaian FA’s vice president Fred Pappoe has rubbished reports that his organisation is planning to meet midfield general Michael Essien to change his mind to return to the Black Stars.

The Chelsea talisman has not featured in any national assignment over a year since he last played at the 2010 Africa Nations Cup in Angola. He has promised to return but remains coy over the actual date.

“I’m also reading that in the media. I have not heard of any such meeting with Essien in England,” Fred Pappoe told Goal.com.

“Our focus is on the two games [Nations Cup qualifier with Congo and friendly against England].”

The local media reported on Wednesday that the FA officials have scheduled a meeting with the midfielder after the first ever meeting at the senior level with the Three Lions of England at the Wembley Stadium on March 29.

Meanwhile, former Ghana and Leeds United star Tony Yeboah has lavished praise on the Chelsea midfielder.

Speaking to Africa Sports, the former forward advised football authorities to be tactful in handling the issue amidst calls by others including a former FA chairman to expel the 28-year-old from the national team.

“Let’s face it, Essien is a massive player whichever way you look at it and so long as he is playing active soccer, the national team stands to benefit from his services,” he said.
