Former Scotland skipper Danny Brough believes he has been given one last chance to make an impact on the international stage with England.
The experienced half-back had opted to switch his allegiance to England with the aim of securing a spot in last year’s Four Nations squad.
But after failing to even make the train-on squad, Brough returned to the Scotland set-up for their European Cup campaign.
He is now back in the England reckoning, though, after an impressive start to the current Super League season with Huddersfield earned him a place in Steve McNamara’s elite training squad.
“Steve came round the clubs and asked all the English-qualified players to have a meeting,” Brough said.
“There were 17 of us at Huddersfield and I threw my hat into the ring for one last time.
“I think it’s my last chance at 28. There are that many good young kids coming through the system. I was over the moon when I ended up getting the phone call.
Worthy
“I wish Scotland the best for the future but I think it was time to think about myself and hopefully I’ll get the chance to prove I am worthy to play for England.
“Playing against Australia and New Zealand is something I’ve always wanted to do.”
Brough admitted that he thought he had missed his chance last season after a disappointing first campaign at the Galpharm Stadium following his move from Wakefield.
He added: “I did think my chance had gone because I didn’t play consistently for all the year.
“I would have a good game and then a bad game. If internationals don’t have a good game, it’s a steady game, whereas I might have had a good game followed by a bad one.
“The best players are consistent week in, week out and that’s what I want to achieve.
“My start to the season helped Steve pick me in the squad. I think I’m probably playing the best rugby I’ve played for quite some time, now that (Huddersfield coach) Nathan Brown has had a pre-season with me.”
