Former Militaray President, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, has raised the alarm over the security situation in the country, describing it as frightening. But the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, yesterday assured that security agents were on top of it and would soon bring the situation under control.
Babangida told the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Kaduna that unless something drastic was done to curtail the situation, anything could happen in the country.
Only on Thursday, a PDP rally in Suleja, Niger State, was bombed by unknown persons, leading to the death of several people and raising fears about the conduct of the forthcoming general election.
Gen. Babangida said had adequate security measures been taken by the government and security agents in the country, the current state of insecurity across the country would have been minimised with the help of God.
While not directly indicting the government for the security situation in the country, he noted that the nation was in a political era, adding that while many people would insist that the government has failed, those in position of power would insist that the government has not failed.
He noted that bomb blasts were alien to Nigerians and dismissed insinuations that he was commenting on the trend for the first time because the recent blasts affected a part of his state.
IBB said some people probably could not hear him make such comments even though they were widely reported.
On Thursday, the State Security Service (SSS) identified three major reasons for security concern in the country.
The Director-General of the SSS, Ita Ekpeyong, named the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Henry Okah; extremist islamic sect, Boko Haram and a flood of illegal arms all over the country as potential threats to the general election, which is barely a month away.
