As he prepares to beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 606 league games for Manchester United on Sunday, Welsh winger Ryan Giggs can be satisfied that after picking up 32 trophies he has had a more successful career than AC Milan legend Paulo Maldini.
That is the view of Goal.com UK readers as Giggs’s United side get ready to take on Liverpool, 20 years after he made his debut for the Red Devils.
Even at 37-years old, the midfielder is still an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad and has signed a new deal to keep him involved for another year.
It was team-mate John O’Shea who claimed Giggs had achieved more than left-back Maldini, widely seen as the most successful footballer of his generation, and a player who managed 647 league games for the Rossoneri. He did, though, only manage 26 honours, while Giggs could make it 33 if United remain top until the end of the season.
We asked YOU who has had the more glittering spell at the top of their game, and the accolade went to Giggs in a tight vote.
A total of 40.75 per cent of readers agreed with O’Shea while 38.27% believed the Italian still held the honour. That left 20.98% who just couldn’t see any light between the pair.
