Spencer Levin conquered the blustery conditions in Florida to set the early pace at the Honda Classic.
With players struggling to cope with the strong wind at Palm Beach Gardens, Levin’s three-under 67 was enough to give him a one-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard before play was suspended.
A total of 12 players were left to complete their rounds when bad light forced the abandonment of the day’s play.
And Levin, who registered four birdies and one bogey, admitted a conservative approach had been his secret to coping with the 20-30mph winds.
He said: “It’s a different kind of golf. You get in a par mode, where you just have to take what the course gives you.”
Conditions
Former champion YE Yang heads the chasing pack on two-under alongside Stuart Appleby, Kyle Stanley, Greg Chalmers and Charl Schwartzel.
“You can actually look at the scores and determine how you’re going to play and what you’re aiming at, what score you’re aiming at,” said Yang.
“So I thought probably just breaking even would be good in these conditions and I played like that, and I played conservative, tried to play even, tried to par. And it worked out quite well.”
The only other players to break par were Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar on one-under.
Lee Westwood, who is chasing a return to the top of the world rankings, finished with a level-par round, while Luke Donald, the winner of last weekend’s WGC-Accenture Match Play, shot a 73.
Donald is joined on three-over by Northern Irish pair Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.
