Arsenal look to have lost out to Villarreal in the race to capture Real Madrid starlet Sergio Canales, according to The Daily Mirror.

Canales has grown frustrated at the lack of first team action at the Bernabeu following his move from Real Sociedad in the summer.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen on the 20-year-old attacking midfielder, but his frosty relationship with Madrid boss Jose Mourinho and the uncertainty over Cesc Fabregas’s future, has allowed Villarreal to step ahead of Arsenal and they could land the youngster for £5 million.

Any deal to take Canales to the Emirates would potentially lead to Madrid enquiring about the possibility of landing Fabregas, a deal which Wenger would refuse to entertain.
