Asamoah Gyan is Sunderland’s lone man upfront

Sunderland coach Steve Bruce has praised Asamoah Gyan as the Ghanaian adapts to life as Sunderland’s lone frontman.

Bruce believes Gyan can shoulder the burden of playing up front on his own for Sunderland.

The Ghanaian international has been deployed as a lone striker of late following the departure of Darren Bent and with Danny Welbeck and Fraizer Campbell still out with injuries.

Sunderland’s £13m record signing has potted 10 goals so far this season and has helped to lay on a number of strikes for others.

And Bruce, who brought Gyan to the club from Rennes in the summer, believes the frontman is ideally suited to his current lone role.

“I think he enjoys it because he’s played there all his life – with his national team, with Rennes and with Udinese before that,” Bruce said.

“He’s not unaccustomed to it and I believe he’s played very, very well.”
