Prof Nii Noi Dowuona, Head, Department of Soil Science at the University of Ghana and former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party has predicted that character will be the most important decider of who wins the presidency in 2012.

Speaking on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji last Saturday, Professor Dowuona said the liberal disposition of President John Evans Atta Mills, his practical demonstration of embracing all and sundry rather than going back to the acrimonious past, coupled with his modest character that he brings to bear on the execution of the presidency are making people uncomfortable.

He said some members of the Ghanaian society have taken to denigrating the president and saying all manner of things against his person in the hope that by so doing, they can lower his esteem. But that, he said, will not stick on the president because his well known disposition puts him in good stead to retain the presidency.

“… in all life endeavours, it is character. Where character will take you, your qualification and your clout and … will not take you and I can bet you in 2012, it is character that will be the major issue at stake and from what I’m seeing, unless people recover and then rediscover themselves, nobody will beat President Mills on character…”.

Professor Dowuona who was addressing the significance of President Mills’ invitation of former President J.A. Kufuor, to the Osu Castle and subsequent calls on President Mills by New Patriotic Party functionaries and followers to also invite Nana Akufo-Addo to the Castle said given the president’s love for accommodating everyone, he would not be surprised if President Mills responds positively but said he should not be stampeded into calling acting. Who he calls or meets is his prerogative.
