Notts County manager Paul Ince has reserved special praise for his son, Thomas Ince, who spent a short two-month loan-spell at Meadow Lane from Liverpool towards the end of 2010, and spoke of the rivalry between the Anfield club and another of his former sides, Manchester United.

Ince junior played six matches for County, scoring two goals in the process and his father believes the loan-spell did both Thomas and the club a world of good.

He helped the Liverpool youngsters reach the final of last season’s FA Youth Cup, and is an England Under-19 international coming through the ranks in encouraging times for the club, who can boast talents such as Raheem Sterling, David Amoo, Jonjo Shelvey and Suso Fernandez.

When asked about signing Thomas on loan, Ince senior said: “It was weird to be fair, a bit of apprehension and excitement because I presumed when I brought Thomas to the club that people were going to say that he was only here because his dad was here.

“That was never the case – he was here because he was a good player, he plays for Liverpool so he is not a bad player.

“I was apprehensive of how the players would take to him and how the fans would take to him, but that was down to himself.”

The former Manchester United star believes that his son definitely silenced any doubters once he put on the Notts County shirt.

He continued: “He got on the park and performed the way I know he can and to be fair he was a revelation here and now all the fans and chairman ask me is when is he coming back?

“But I don’t think he will be coming back because obviously he’s at Liverpool now. It was a good experience for him, he needed to get out, he needed first team football and he still comes to watch the games. He misses it. But yes it was great to work with him.”

Ahead of Liverpool’s match with Manchester United on Sunday, Ince said that is the fan rivalry and immense history that the two clubs have that makes the fixture so special.

He said: “I think it’s just a rivalry between the fans. I think it’s the history Liverpool actually probably conquered the ’80s wining title after title and European Cups.

“Then Man Utd came along in the ’90s winning the Premiership and now its 18 titles a piece the last thing Liverpool want is Man Utd to win the title.

“It is just a rivalry between the clubs and the history that is steeped in the clubs. The games are fantastic occasions they really are, the football, tackles that are flying in makes it a great game to be involved in.”
