The New England Revolution announced it has signed Nigerian midfielder Michael Augustine to a Major League Soccer contract.

Augustine, who joined the team this morning at training in Kennesaw, Ga., will occupy one of the team’s eight international roster spots upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Per MLS and club policies, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Augustine, 18, comes to MLS from Nigerian side FCT Abuja. After starting his career with the academy team in 2005, Augustine was promoted to the club’s first team in 2008.

“Michael is a young midfielder who we believe can have a promising future in our league,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “He has pace and will add to the depth we have in the midfield this season.”

The young Nigerian joins veteran Ousemane Dabo and rookie Steven McCarthy as new additions to the Revs’ midfield.

Augustine scored 18 goals for FCT Abuja since joining the first team 2008, and helped the squad gain promotion to the Nigerian Premier League in 2009. Augustine was also a member of the team that won Nigeria’s FA Youth Cup.
