Helena Bonham Carter has revealed to me how she tried to help Prime Minister David Cameron sell his Big Society concept to the British public, using some of her strongly-held ideas on child-rearing.

It seemed an unlikely subject to be discussing at Vanity Fair’s Oscar party, but the award- winning actress said she wanted to talk about anything but the Oscars.

This was in spite of the fact that she was ‘thrilled beyond bits’ that her film, The King’s Speech, had won four trophies, including Best Picture and honours for Colin Firth, director Tom Hooper and writer David Seidler.

‘It’s lovely, but it takes up so much of your life,’ she said, as she and partner Tim Burton stood by one of the bars at the Sunset Towers Hotel on Sunset Boulevard.

Helena, 44, has met Cameron through her friendship with Nick Clegg, with whom she went to school.

She and Tim stayed at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country retreat, and they got chatting about politics with Mr Cameron.

‘My life has changed completely since I started taking classes in raising kiddies through Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting with Noel Janis-Norton,’ Helena confided.
