Chelsea‘s Yossi Benayoun is focusing on a return to Premier League action in a month’s time as he progresses with an Achilles injury that has plagued his season at Stamford Bridge.

The Israeli international suffered a torn Achilles in his third appearance for the club back in September and has been out of action ever since, with surgery and an extensive lay-off required to get the midfielder back to match fitness.

The former Liverpool man’s return to light training has gone well and he may be fit enough to feature in Chelsea’s squad within the next few weeks, with an away date against Stoke next month for Carlo Ancelotti’s team looking like a realistic target.

He told the Jewish Chronicle: “I’m feeling really good and progressing well. I hope to return to full training with Chelsea within a week or two.

“My hope is to be match fit towards the end of the month.”

Despite the long-term nature of the injury, the player maintained that he was confident he would be able to return when told of others who had made full recoveries from similar problems.

The 30-year-old added: “It wasn’t easy to be given the verdict about the injury.

“But the moment I’d undergone the operation and the surgeon told me about other players who had fully recovered from the same injury and returned to play, I began to feel calmer.

“I really believe in myself now and I’ve been running for quite a few weeks, sometimes with the ball.”
