Avoka who stormed the offices of Daily Guide in Kumasi on Wednesday in the company of a friend around 3:00pm said; he was leaving the party together with 4,200 members of the NDC Northerners Association in Kumasi.
According to him, he singlehandedly founded the association prior to the 2008 elections to organize northerners living in the Ashanti regional capital to work assiduously for the party to win. Avoka said that due to his immense love for the NDC, he worked diligently to get more members for the association who in turn worked conscientiously to ensure that the party increased its votes in the region.
He noted that leading members of the Party including then candidate Mills met his group on several occasions and promised to better their lot if they worked tirelessly to help the NDC return to power Avoka who was also NDC branch chairman at Atasemanso in the Nyieaso constituency indicated that he personally used his store as an office for the association and funded it because of that promise.
He and the group have however been neglected since the party assumed the reins of government to the extent that members cannot find jobs, he said.
Avoka pointed out that several reminders sent to the NDC leadership about the promises they made have not been responded to. “I have personally written to President Mills, the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and other highly placed officials of our party that we are still waiting for the promise they made to us but none of my letters have been responded to,” he sadly noted.
Avoka indicated that he took it upon himself to search for jobs for his members as leader of the association and contacted the regional office of the National youth Employment Programme (NYEP) for assistance but was turned down. “Can you imagine that the NYEP people refused to give me jobs for the people when indeed then candidate Mills himself took our numbers and promised to give each one of us the job we prefer if he wins power?” he furiously observed.
Avoka said because members of his association do not have any work to do – they have been compelled to relocate to their various towns because they cannot simply afford “a single meal.”
He further accused the Mills-led administration of mismanaging the economy and noted that though he is not a member of the NPP, the truth is that Ghana’s economy was much sounder during the Kufuor era adding that back then even the unemployed could afford a meal.
Avoka said in the not too distant future, the group would publicly announce which party they would be joining stressing that no amount of inducement will make them rescind their decision to leave the NDC.
He indicated that the party they decide to join will surely come to power following the 2012 elections, saying they would use the same strategies they employed in 2008 to win power for the NDC to achieve this.
