She was the butter-wouldn’t-melt actress who won our hearts when she starred alongside Zac Efron in High School Musical.

But now it seems Vanessa Hudgens is determined to leave her Disney past behind her, and reinvent herself as a ‘badass’.

The 22-year-old actress started her reinvention with a butterfly tattoo on her neck, and last night revealed the inspiration behind the inking during an interview on the Late Show with David Letterman.

She said: ‘It was very last minute, but I’ve actually wanted it for years. A butterfly landed on my mum’s stomach a week before I was born and that’s how I got my name, because Vanessa means butterfly – it’s a Latin derivative.

‘It’s my very first tattoo, and I kind of feel like a badass now!’

But Letterman wouldn’t let Vanessa forget her High School Musical days, showing her a spoof of the final installment in the franchise featuring Bruce Willis in the famous Wildcats costume.

However, Vanessa wasn’t impressed by the video, telling Letterman: ‘That could give you nightmares!’

Asked if she had a good time shooting the films with now ex-boyfriend Efron, Vanessa replied: ‘It was so much fun. It’s kind of a thing of the past now though.’

The actress appeared on the show to promote her new movie Beastly, in which she stars with British actor Alex Pettyfer and Mary-Kate Olson in the revised Beauty and the Beast story set in a New York high school.

Pretty in pink: Vanessa teamed her pink dress with black fishnet tights and heels as she arrived for the interview

Talking about the film recently, Vanessa said: ‘It’s really important to stand for what you believe in, and this message is definitely something that’s very strong and close to my heart.

‘But I think the main thing always is to develop the character, develop a real person with depth and emotions, and to have it come from a personal place.’

Arriving for her Letterman interview yesterday, Vanessa looked stunning in a tight pink dress, fishnet tights and beige heels.
