MP David Lammy has asked for the government to help rebuild Tottenham‘s White Hart Lane after the club were refused permission to move into the Olympic Stadium in 2012.

Lammy, who was speaking at DCMS Questions, asked if sports minister Hugh Robertson would meet with him, the Haringey Council and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to discuss the potential plans.

The minister’s response will been seen as encouraging for Lammy and Spurs. He said: “The short answer is yes, of course I will. I have met the right honourable gentleman a number of times during the bidding process and I have also made an offer through the Tottenham board to see whether I can do anything to help.

“I suspect that my powers in this area will be limited, because I think that the arguments and issues are to do with planning, but if there is anything I can do to help, I will do it.”

The land in question is currently known as the Northumberland Park development and has received planning permission from the Haringey Council for a stadium that will include

a 150-bed hotel, 200 new homes, a supermarket plus substantial office space.

The plans are being built around the regeneration of North Tottenham as the work would ensure hundreds of local contruction jobs for around seven years, plus many jobs in and around the stadium in the future.

Lammy talked of the importance of the move, saying: “
It is integral to the future of Tottenham that Spurs redevelop White Hart Lane into a world-class stadium.

“It will create thousands of jobs in the part of the capital with the highest rate of unemployment and it will be a huge economic boost to our community.

“The club is a huge source of pride in our community and we want to see them play and win against the best teams in Europe in one of the best stadiums in Europe.

“It is essential that all parties involved – the club, the local council, the mayor and the government – work together to deliver this scheme that will not only benefit Tottenham residents, but the hundreds of thousands of Tottenham fans across London and the world.”
