Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wes Brown will start against Liverpool, with Rio Ferdinand still unavailable due to a calf injury.

The two teams clash at Anfield as the Red Devils look to bounce back from their defeat to Chelsea, but they will have to do so without their first-choice centre-backs, Nemanja Vidic and Ferdinand.

Skipper Vidic was sent off against Chelsea on Tuesday night, while Ferguson has confirmed that Ferdinand is not yet ready to return.

“[Rio] won’t be fit. Wes will take over,” Ferguson told MUTV. “He has great experience.”

Brown, who has made only two starts in the league this season, is expected to partner Chris Smalling in the centre of defence.
