Pastor Dupes Woman

A district magistrate court in Takoradi on Thursday remanded James Kwofie, 72, a self-styled pastor, into prison custody for defrauding a woman to the tune of GH¢ 840.

The court charged him with defrauding by false pretence and is to re-appear on March 8.

Prosecuting, Sergeant Ben Annor told the court that in April last year the accused approached Madam Cecilia Agbeko, a trader, and told her that she was being haunted by spirits and that explained why her business was not flourishing.

He said the accused collected sums of money from Mad. Agbeko to perform rites for her and in January told her that the time was ripe for the rituals to be performed. He took her to the Kwesimintsim Cemetery to perform the rituals but the accused had teamed up with some gangs to come in and disorganize the rituals.

Sergeant Annor told the court that the group moved in and arrested the pastor and she could not trace him.

He said in February the complainant arranged with a friend to feign she had a similar spiritual problem therefore needed the pastor’s assistance and called him on his mobile phone.

The prosecutor said the accused showed up and he was arrested.
