NPP Bans Executives

As part of plans to ensure free and fair parliamentary primaries, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has prohibited both the national, regional and constituency executives from fronting for aspirants wishing to contest the polls.

To ensure that this prohibition is strictly respected, the party’s hierarchy has decided to take serious disciplinary actions against any executive who goes contrary to the directive.

Any executive who goes against the directive, according to the tenets of the party’s disciplinary actions, would either lose his status as an executive member or forfeit his position as a member of the Electoral College.

The NPP chairman for the Afigya Sekeyre West constituency in the Ashanti region, Kwadwo Brobbey Awuah, made this known when Akwasi Karikari Achamfuor picked his nomination forms to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the constituency.

He said though the ban had been clearly stated in the party’s constitution, it had been given special emphasis this time around to ensure an equal level playing field for the aspirants contesting the polls.

The effective implementation of the ban and its accompanying disciplinary actions, according to the NPP chairman, was the surest way of arresting the usual irritations aspirants raised as a result of perceived support for some candidates by some executives.

Urging all executives across the country to strictly observe the ban in the supreme interest of the party, Mr. Awuah noted that he was determined to enforce the ban and therefore entreated his colleagues to do same.

Speaking to Daily Guide after picking his nomination forms, Mr. Achamfuor, the immediate past District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afigya Kwabre, said he was motivated to join the race because he had what it took to be a Member of Parliament (MP).

The former presiding member of the Afigya Sekyere district assembly emphasized that having served as constituency secretary of the party and also worked in several professional fields for so many years, he had acquired the requisite training to become an effective MP.

He noted that the underlying factor of his ambition to become a legislator was to have an opportunity to continue the development projects he planned to execute in the area when he was made DCE.

According to him, he could not bring to bear all his developmental ideas because he was DCE for only six months when the NPP lost power and therefore needed another opportunity to contribute his quota towards the development of the area.

The former deputy director in charge of operations at the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) stressed that he was the best person to contest the 2012 parliamentary elections on the ticket of the NPP because he could increase the votes of the party.

Mr. Achamfuor explained that he was capable of achieving this feat by virtue of his good works in the area.

“When I become the parliamentary candidate of the NPP for the 2012 polls, the party can maximize its votes in the area because of my strong connection with all the divisions in the area including supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC),” he said.

All things been equal, Mr Achamfuor will be contesting the April 30 primaries with one Nana Marfo, a senior official at the Ghana Commercial Bank and Osei Amponsah, immediate past Ashanti regional coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

The winner of the polls is likely to succeed Hon Kan Albert Dapaah, who has represented the constituents four consecutive times but has decided not to seek re-election for the fifth time.
